Our Mission
The Mentoring Kings Research Institute (MKRI) exists to transform the educational and life outcomes of boys and young men of color through research, innovation, and evidence-informed practice. We develop and advance the Mentoring Kings Framework™, equipping educators, mentors, schools, and communities with culturally responsive tools that strengthen literacy, leadership, identity, and long-term success. By bridging research and practice, MKRI empowers institutions to create environments where every young man is seen, supported, challenged, and prepared to thrive in school, career, and life.

We envision a world where every boy and young man of color has access to the relationships, opportunities, and educational environments needed to realize his full potential. The Mentoring Kings Research Institute aspires to be the leading global authority on research, innovation, and evidence-informed practices that advance mentoring, literacy, leadership, and holistic youth development. Through the Mentoring Kings Framework™, we seek to transform schools, strengthen communities, inform public policy, and inspire a new generation of educators, mentors, researchers, and leaders committed to creating equitable pathways to success. Inspired by the Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles)—a cultural framework that emphasizes unity, self-determination, collective responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith—we have adopted these enduring principles as guiding values within the Mentoring Kings Framework™.
Unity
Definition
"To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race."
What It Means
We believe success is built through meaningful relationships and a strong sense of belonging. Unity encourages collaboration, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to helping one another thrive.
How It Applies in MK
In Mentoring Kings, Unity is lived out through brotherhood circles, peer accountability, and the belief that no young man walks his journey alone. We build cohesive cohorts where every member is responsible for the growth and well-being of the group.
Self-Determination
Definition
"To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves."
What It Means
Young people should be empowered to define who they are, discover their voice, and shape their own futures with confidence, purpose, and integrity.
How It Applies in MK
MK creates intentional spaces where young men author their own narratives — through identity work, goal-setting, and leadership development. We reject deficit thinking and replace it with a culture where every young man is the expert on his own potential.
Collective Responsibility
Definition
"To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers' and sisters' problems our problems and to solve them together."
What It Means
Every child benefits when families, educators, mentors, and communities work together. We share a responsibility to create environments where every young person has the opportunity to succeed.
How It Applies in MK
MK activates the full ecosystem — mentors, teachers, families, and community partners — around each young man. We train educators and mentors to see themselves as co-architects of student success, not just observers of it.
Cooperative Economics
Definition
"To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together."
What It Means
Success grows through collaboration and shared opportunity. We encourage entrepreneurship, financial literacy, resource stewardship, and investing in communities that create pathways for future generations.
How It Applies in MK
MK introduces young men to financial literacy, entrepreneurial thinking, and the value of investing in their communities. We connect academic achievement to real-world economic agency — helping young men see education as a pathway to ownership, not just employment.
Purpose
Definition
"To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness."
What It Means
Purpose gives direction to learning and leadership. We help young people connect their talents, passions, and goals to lives of meaning, service, and positive impact.
How It Applies in MK
Every MK experience is designed to help young men answer the question: Why am I here? Through mentoring, career exploration, and service learning, we help participants connect their academic journey to a larger sense of calling and contribution.
Creativity
Definition
"To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it."
What It Means
Innovation, creativity, and problem-solving are essential for growth. We encourage young people to use their gifts to improve their schools, communities, and the world around them.
How It Applies in MK
MK honors multiple forms of intelligence and expression. We integrate the arts, storytelling, and design thinking into our programming — affirming that creativity is not a supplement to academic success, but a driver of it.
Faith
Definition
"To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle."
What It Means
Faith is confidence in oneself, belief in others, and hope for the future. It inspires perseverance, resilience, and the courage to pursue excellence despite challenges.
How It Applies in MK
MK cultivates a culture of belief — belief in each young man's capacity to grow, lead, and succeed. Mentors model faith through consistent presence and high expectations. Young men are taught that setbacks are not the end of the story, but part of the journey toward greatness.

Dr. Kelly M. Downing is the founder and executive director of the Mentoring Kings Research Institute and the architect of the Mentoring Kings Framework™ — a culturally responsive, evidence-informed model designed to transform the educational and life outcomes of boys and young men of color. With over two decades of experience in education, research, and youth development, Dr. Downing has dedicated his career to closing the opportunity gap and building systems that affirm the brilliance, identity, and potential of every young man he serves.
A nationally recognized speaker, author, and researcher, Dr. Downing brings a rare combination of scholarly rigor and practitioner wisdom to his work. His research focuses on mentoring, literacy, culturally responsive pedagogy, and the social-emotional development of boys of color. He has partnered with schools, districts, universities, and community organizations across the country to implement the Mentoring Kings Framework™ and train educators and mentors in evidence-based strategies that produce measurable results.
Dr. Downing's guiding belief — that every boy deserves an adult who believes in him before he believes in himself — is not just a philosophy. It is the foundation upon which every MKRI program, publication, and partnership is built.
